The Challenge

Third grade reading skills predict high school graduation rates--only 59% of Waco third-graders are proficient readers while 95% qualify for free/reduced lunch. Educational success is not an even playing field and is often determined by the socio-economic status of the child’s family.

The implications for our children, their families, and Waco-McLennan County’s economic health are significant.  Only 12% of disadvantaged youth in McLennan County complete higher education.

We have a serious health crisis.  For the first time in history, the next generation is facing a shorter lifespan than their parents.

70% of McLennan County adults are considered overweight or obese, while 46% of youth are considered above their healthy body weight.  Our family, friends, and neighbors are battling obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and other preventable chronic diseases.

50% of our neighbors live below federal poverty level, struggling to access healthy lifestyle choices, affordable child care, and job security.

Affected children are more likely to be overweight/obese, hospitalized, and perform poorly in school.
