According to the American Nutrition Association, food deserts are geographical areas that lack sufficient supply of fresh vegetables, fruits, and healthful, affordable whole foods. Food deserts are generally impoverished areas and they are viewed as a national crisis. Fortunately, nonprofit organizations and government initiatives are in place to provide relief for affected Americans.

THE Y HELPS WACO CHILDREN LEARN TO BE SAFE AROUND WATER

WACO, April 11, 2018 – As part of the Y’s commitment to reduce drowning rates and keep kids safe in and around the water, the YMCA of Central Texas will provide scholarships for swim instruction and water safety to children from underserved communities in Waco and McLennan County.

Adolescents often experience a high amount of stress as a result of their environment. Homework and peer pressure are just two of the factors that cause stress among children. As a means to help manage youth stress, medical professionals and school faculty have promoted exercise, particularly interscholastic sports to adolescents. The problem is, participation in sports is not necessarily a cure-all. In fact, athletics can be highly stressful to adolescents if they approach it the wrong way. Sports can be both beneficial and disadvantageous.
